Annual For Shady Areas

Summer is here! As temperatures rise and tree canopies once again cover lawns and flower gardens with shade, homeowners can select a variety of extremely colorful and vibrant annual plants for landscape beds and flower gardens. Nothing is more beautiful than a garden laden with compatible flowering colors, arranged so that they bloom in succession throughout the summer months.

As any master gardener knows, planting tall annuals in the back of the bed, with progressively smaller, lower growing plants in the front, makes a wonderful sight in gardens, near high traffic areas, walking areas, along property borders, and as individual, stand-alone beds.

For best planting results, prepare your flower bed just as you would a vegetable garden, making sure the soil is worked up to a depth of several inches before planting. Also, be sure to work in a helping of compost, in addition to an application of flower-focused fertilizer at the time of planting, to help speed the development of both roots and flowers.
